Mission City FWC opened its doors in Northwest San Antonio, TX in 2009. While new to San Antonio, Mission City is not a new concept. The original wellness/holistic concept was created back in 2000 in Arizona after a group of ministers endeavored to meet the demands of their community outreach ministry (The Emmaus Project).
Bringing hope back into the lives of Arizona Valley residents who were affected by job loss, financial instability, family conflict, and basic living essentials, was the foundational principal. Very quickly, the Emmaus Project became a network of local and regional businesses that gave of their time and resources to aid families in professional counseling, job placement assistance, adult & child mentoring, mental health assessment, and housing. In 2001, The Emmaus Project received a special recognition award from Governor Jane Dee Hull, Mayor Skip Rimsza of Phoenix, and Mayor Mary Manross of Scottsdale for dedicated service to children and families in Arizona.
Using a similar foundational model, Gary Demers (Emmaus Project founder) opened the doors of Mission City FWC to meet a more specific need - the gap in mental health counseling, treatment, and case management for individuals and families in San Antonio, TX. The social stigma surrounding Mental Health has certainly gotten better over the years, but there is still much more to overcome. A recent National Survey on Mental Health, completed by NAMI is very alarming. "Mental health care in America is in crisis. The nation’s mental health
care system gets a dismal D. As the nation confronts a severe economic
crisis, demand for mental health services is increasing -- but state
budget cuts are creating a vicious cycle that is leaving some of our
most vulnerable citizens behind." - NAMI's Executive Director, Michael J. Fitzpatrick
